New Year, New Artists

Hello everyone, well this is the first post of the year, I guess I've been a bit slack lately.
We haven't been idle in the shop though, we have lots of lovely new things in, so I thought I ought to share some of them with you.
First up we have some gorgeous wrapping paper from the awesome Betty and Dupree.

We also have some great new lithographic prints by Swedish artist Ingela P Arrhenius, there are 10 different designs, all 50 x 70cm and all priced at a very affordable £25.

We also have some lovely screenprints by Paul Blow and a selection of giclee prints by Marie Rogers and Maria Livings and all priced under £40 too.

Finally it's Valentines' Day soon and we have a great selection of non slushy cards and prints, perfect for your loved one.

A Beano of an exhibition, 8th Nov - 31st Dec.

Nick Brennan is a freelance cartoonist who has worked for clients including the BBC, Oxford University Press, and our very own Falmouth Art Gallery. But perhaps most well-known are the comic strips that he's drawn for the Beano and the Dandy over the past twenty years. Over that time he's drawn a number of characters for both publications, and this exhibition features the original artwork, drawn in pen & ink, of a number of them.

Included are pages of his longest running character, Blinky, the all-round buffoon who has appeared in the Dandy for over 15 years. Also here are pages from the Beano strip "Crazy for Daisy", which ran for over a decade, and featured lovestruck young Ernest Valentine and Daisy, the object of his over-enthusiastic affections. Amongst a variety of other characters appearing is, perhaps, the most famous of the bunch, Billy Whizz, the fastest boy in the world, who appears in the Beano every week, drawn by Nick.

All the pages in this exhibition have appeared in print, albeit digitally coloured, and with speech bubbles added.

Introducing Kiykera Brown

Kiykera Brown is a new Cornish designer specialising in whimsical illustrations of a burlesque nature.

Although born, raised and currently living in Cornwall she takes inspiration from nights out on the burlesque scene in Liverpool and her travels around the UK and Japan. Her favourite burlesque artist is Millie Dollar closely followed by her close friend, Miss Cherry Kitten.

Other inspiration comes from Japanese anime and manga and a love of figurative life drawing from an early age. Kiykera studied textiles, printing and design at Falmouth University and Swansea Metropolitan University and has done life drawing with Guy Noble of Central Saint Martin’s and Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School.

These cheeky illustrations use a combination of hand drawn and digital imagery to create a delightful 1950s inspired series of ‘modern pin-up girls’. Although slightly risqué Kiykera is very careful with the content of her drawings and is very against the over sexualisation of women in the modern world. Her drawings hark back to a much more innocent era where burlesque was very much about the dance and the tease and was a form of entertainment enjoyable by either sex.

Kiykera uses specially sourced crafters bottle tops as a vehicle for her images printing onto specialised decal paper and sealing with resin for a high quality finish. Her father’s side of the family lived for many years in Zimbabwe, where local women and children make art from bottle caps and found objects on the roadside. Gifts from her Grandmother, bought from these sellers whilst visiting in Africa, have inspired her use of found objects including recycling old lampshades, fabrics and plates for her series of home wares.

Kiykera Brown art and illustrations can be found on a range of handmade jewellery exclusive to the Here and Now Gallery and Kiykera’s own website or craft stalls. She is also working on expanding the range into home wares with lampshades, oven gloves, peg bags and decorative plates all being finalised in her studio for sale before Christmas! Many of her background images are inspired by her biro drawings of found objects and are about subverting the traditional floral prints of the textiles world. These images feature more prominently in her large prints on home wares and plates.

A Forest Tale - Mini Exhibition, on now till November

Tom Hubmann is an illustrator who currently resides in Cornwall where he enjoys long walks by the sea, looking for piskies and supping tea. Tom has just finished an MA in Illustration: Authorial Practice, at the University of Falmouth.

During the winter of 2010 / 11, Tom begun work on ‘A Forest Tale’ which documents, celebrates and looks at some of the issues surrounding our relationship with trees.

The project takes the form of a mini exhibition and can best be described as being playful, with serious undertones. It includes screen prints, risograph prints, mono prints, narratives, postcards and even notebooks made entirely out of sheep poo.

Engaging the imagination in a playful manner, Tom’s work explores context, humour, wonderment and simplicity. It journeys through the realms of the unexpected, the absurd and the ‘what if?’.
Combining line drawing, pattern, texture and printmaking, the output can be quite diverse including comics, posters, tshirts and handcrafted books. He enjoys working in different formats allowing him to develop a different style to support the message of each individual project.

Were back

Hello,
It's been a while since I've posted anything on here but that doesn't mean that nothing exciting has been happenning, in fact I have been rather busy with our new arrival, a little baby boy. His arival has led us to make a few changes in the shop and we are now stocking a lot more gifts, a few homeware items from mellybee and even some baby bibs and other bits from hootchie mama.
We have decided to give the exhibitions a rest for a while to concentrate more on other things, but there is plenty of new artwork including some lovely prints from Bethan Buss and peskimo to come in and see.

Hope you've all had an amazing summer and we hope to see you soon.

Something fishy going on

Mellybee is back with a new batch of work this week focusing on a nautical theme.
There are prints, tote bags, badges, magnets and teatowels all beautifully designed and finished by Melanie, come down to Falmouth soon for a closer look.

Thought I'd let you know Mel has also been interviewed by Burst Magazine for their latest issue on Typography. "Although I wouldn't say I was a Typesetter I do love to create quirky hand-drawn lettering and so you'll find a few of my newer pieces centred on my nautical theme are featured alongside the interview.
It was a bit of a surprise to be asked but I found the process a great way to reflect on where I was with my illustration/art practice and a helpful reminder of how I've progressed and where I'm going."

Dazeray, the illustrative duo that is Daisy Whitehouse and Murray Somerville, are proud to tell you about our upcoming exhibition at the Here and Now gallery in Falmouth "You're My Favourite- A sweet and twisted illustration exhibition to remind you that everyone is good at something! "

This is Dazeray's second exhibition together, combining the beautiful charm of Daisy's sweet and fun characters alongside the intriguing yet disturbing, eccentric characters by Murray, creating a unique exhibition of both the good and the just plan weird of life!

The exhibition runs from 2nd-29th June and will include new original screenprints from Daisy, Display Comics from Murray and a collective alphabet between the two and a hand drawn window mural! (Also with badges, zines, posters too!!!) All of the intention to introduce a host of characters just eager to show off their best qualities and why they're our favourite, and so you too feel special, whether it be because you pick your nose or are the best at cuddles, we'll have a place for you!

For anyone interested in the exhibition but unable to make it in June, we will be taking extensive photographs of the whole set-up and put them up on the net, but we are planning to expand on this theme and take the exhibition back to london, so if anyone is interested in putting the exhibition up further on this year, then again get in touch!

Tokens and Totems

Coming up in May we have a solo show by Bristol based artist Elsie Jones.

Elsie says: 'I am influenced by folk art, such as Kachina dolls and simple primitive figures, but also by vintage plastic toys and pop culture. I am interested in the combination and fusion of all these elements, along with other interests and influences, such as textile art and costume, feminine and domestic handicrafts, vintage kitsch and graphics, collections, old toys and comic characters, pattern, decoration, and embellishment.I hoard colourful, decorative, vintage or weird found objects, and combine them with my drawing, crochet, embroidery and collage.'

The show will run from May 5th-27th.

Anyone for Tea?

Hello! this month we have doubled the reasons for visiting the gallery with not one but two shows up on the walls. Alongside Barnaby Purdy's excellent Visitants robots we have a super tea themed show by newcomer to Falmouth Melanie Chadwick. Melanie is an artist living and working in the UK. She graduated in 2002 with a degree in Fine Art and from 2006-2008 had the opportunity to live in Hong Kong. Since returning to the UK she has been developing her own art practice in painting, illustration and design.

"I have exhibited my fine art in galleries around the North East of Scotland, and am building my Mellybee brand where I showcase quirky illustrations ready for print, textiles and web. More recently I have been creating illustrations for children’s books. I sell via etsy and other independent boutiques both online and on the street."

All of Melanie's work is very affordable and would make great presents for Easter, as well as lasting longer and having a lot less calories than Easter eggs too.

The Visitants - Barnaby Purdy

Barnaby lives by the sea with some cats. He draws a lot and doesn't get out a much as he needs. But pencils are his friends, they hang out lots and go on big adventures together.

The show at Here and now is all new work and not been seen before. It is entitled "Just passing through" and is the first part of an ongoing project called "The Visitants". "Just passing through" features a series of robot visitors to earth, good and evil.

Each piece is a lino print that has been cut specifically for the background images which have come from a set of encyclopaedias form 1972, and printed on to the original page. Once dried, they are drawn again in graphite on top of the print. Due to the vintage images used there is only one chance to get it right meaning each is unique and a one off.
　
"The encyclopaedias used are a set that my grandparents had that I used to pour through in wonder at the age of 5, I recently rediscovered some of these books in a charity shop. The pictures within them now had an added power of nostalgia, and I knew I had to do something with them and share their forgotten beauty, and giant robots were the obvious theme to help achieve this".

February seems to have flown past real quick what with Valentines Day and travelling to Bristol to collect some copies of the latest issues of High Fructose magazine, it seems that Sarah Dennis's show has only just started but in fact it's almost time for the next one to begin.

Coming up next we are delighted to be showing work by the wonderful Peepshow Collective.

Peepshow was founded in 2000 by graduates of the University of Brighton to facilitate self promotion, share clients and collaborate. Since then, as a collective and as individuals, we have worked extensively within the areas of illustration, advertising, art direction, moving image, set design, mixed media installation and fashion and textile design. As illustrators they have frequently appeared in publications such as The Guardian, The Observer, The Telegraph and The New York Times and their work regularly features in Creative Review, Design Week and Varoom. They have been asked to contribute to many books on the subject of illustration including Pen & Mouse, Illusive, The Fundamentals of Illustration, Picture Book and Hand To Eye. Collectively Peepshow’s moving image work has been featured at ‘onedotzero: adventures in motion’ at the ICA, ‘Counter:Vision’ at The Hayward Gallery and as part of ‘Pictoplasma’ in New York as well as appearing on channels such as the BBC, Channel 4 and MTV. With this
eclectic approach, different experiences and individual skills they offer a unique and exciting approach to ideas and imagery.

Team Muju are 2 Artists who have recently moved to St Ives Cornwall, to set up their new Muju Studio & workshop by the Atlantic Ocean.They have been creating artwork together since 2004.
Miss Muju creates intricate handmade felt sculptures & has exhibited her Muju figures worldwide.
Mr Muju works with ink & paint & creates limited edition prints & intricate paintings on wood.
Their work has recently appeared in exhibitions in USA and Europe, and has featured in publications on character design & Street Art.

The exhibition will run from 2nd November - 4th December.
Tues - Sat. 10am - 5pm.

Illustration competition: design a Christmas card for ShelterBox 
 
 
An exciting new creative competition has been launched today, giving both new and established illustrators, graphic designers and artists the chance to have their work featured alongside some of the UK’s top illustrators in a special range of charity Christmas cards for ShelterBox.  
 
The cards will be sold in packs of 10, featuring two sets of five designs. 
Competition entrants across the UK will be vying for their design to be featured as the fifth card alongside the four other high‐profile illustrators contributing work. All profits from the cards will go direct to ShelterBox, the international disaster relief charity based  in Helston, Cornwall.  
 
Jon Burgerman, one of the UK’s most revered illustrators and cartoonists, is designing the first card in the set: “In this iAge of digital everything, a nicely designed card is a great little goodie to give,” he said. “It can be like a mini artwork, beaming from a mantel piece.” 

The second card in the set will be designed by Jenny Bowers – whose recent projects include illustrations for Channel 4, The New York Times, Creative Review and Samsung  –with two more names being announced at the official launch in November. 

The Christmas cards and competition are the idea of Penryn‐based creative communications agency, Stranger Collective – the team behind the former award‐winning creative lifestyle magazine. Helen Gilchrist, director of Stranger Collective, said: “We wanted to create an alternative range of Christmas cards this year – cards that are 
original, colourful and fun, which we would want to send our friends. After publishing the magazine, we’re lucky to be in touch with a fantastic network of illustrators like Jon and Jenny – but wanted to use this as an opportunity to  show off fresh talent too.” 
 
Helen has recently become a ShelterBox Response Team member, trained to accompany ShelterBox’s aid into the disaster zone to ensure it reaches those who need it most. She adds: “ShelterBox was our natural choice of charity – they’re highly respected on the international stage, they were the leading provider of emergency shelter in Haiti, and are based just up the road from us!” 
 
Each ShelterBox provides an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and essential survival equipment to use while they rebuild their homes. 
 
A special event to launch the cards will be held on the evening Thursday 11 November at The Poly, Falmouth, where the final five designs will be unveiled. The cards will then be available to buy in shops and online up until Christmas.  
 
This rare opportunity to contribute a design is open to everyone. The competition closes at midnight on Wednesday 20 October and the winner will be announced on Friday 22 October.  
 
How to enter:

• Designs should be 300dpi, 105 x 150mm JPGs in portrait aspect ratio. 
• Illustrations should focus around a seasonal theme of Christmas, contain no specific religious content and appeal to a wide audience. 
 

Charity Exhibition raising money for CLIC Sargent

Silje Marie Kristiansen & Ceri Mai Jones are going to climb Kilimanjaro to raise money for CLIC Sargent, Caring for Children with Cancer. In connection with this, we are hosting an exhibition here in Falmouth to help raise some funds. Lots of people have already donated artwork for the show but we want to invite all creative people interested in donating work to the exhibition!
You donate your work, and if it is sold, the money goes straight to the charity, CLIC Sargent, Caring for Children with Cancer. So you will be helping a great cause with your work!
In return, you get your work promoted for an entire month, at the Here & Now Gallery.
The theme is COLOURS, just because, through your support, we can help make someone’s life more colourful. Sounds a bit cheesy, but this makes you able to do pretty much what you want. Focus on one specific colour, specific pallet, use all colours, bright colours, or whatever you want! Have fun with it!

The exhibition will take place from the 29th September – 31st October. With the private view on 28th September from 6-9pm.

Ed Boxall is a printmaker, illustrator and writer. He self publishes his poetic illustrated books as 'The Pearbox Press' and creates his unique woodblock and lino prints on a converted mangle. His work often begins with his family life- camping holidays- visits to farms- days on the beach -but flies off into the romantic fantasy that expresses the deep emotion and timeless revery. Images of sea recurr throughout his work, inspired by his home town of Hastings.
Ed will be exhibited handmade prints along with a full range of his books and original artwork from the books.

Ed studied Illustration at St Martins College, has worked as a commercial illustrator and teacher. He now focusses on independant printimaking and self publishing.

There will be a family-friendly exhibition opening on Sunday 1st August, 12 pm to 2pm.
Ed will be there to help you have a go at the special mix of drawing and collage he used for his new book 'The Rooftop Garden'.

The Travelling Menagerie comes to Falmouth

The 'Girls Who Draw' invite you to visit their 'Travelling Menagerie' exhibition which will be at the Here and Now Gallery in Falmouth during July. The show features artwork from the 'Menagerie' postcard book alongside new work based on the same theme. The 10 illustrators participating in 'Travelling Menagerie' are Anke Weckmann, Mary Kilvert, Gemma Correll, Kate Hindley, Sarah Ray, Ruth Green, Yee Ting Kuit, Currentstate (aka Jane Anderson) Karoline Rerrie and Michelle Turton. We also have a special guest, the illustrator, screen printer and zine maker extraordinaire Helen Eintwisle who sells work under the name Memo. Helen has made zines especially for the 'Travelling Menagerie' exhibition. About the artists:

Julia Pott
After outgrowing her childhood dream of becoming a balloon, Julia is now a freelance illustrator and animator living in London. Her work mainly consists of animals making the moves on other animals through the medium of pencil drawing and collage. Her clients include Malibu Rum, Passion Pictures, Picasso Pictures, Sherbet, Picador, Chronicle Books, Hudson Bec, London Sinfonietta, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Of Montreal and The Decemberists.
Her work has been shown at SXSW, Onedotzero, Rushes, and in collaborative exhibitions in the UK and US. She is currently studying an MA in animation at the Royal College of Art, and has a solo show in London later this year. In her spare time she enjoys trampolining and building forts in the countryside.

Amy Ruppel
Born and raised in the Kettle Moraine woods of WIsconsin near the Mammoth Ice Age Center. She drew plants and comics, dug up fossils and went for endless forest walks before being chased back home by some territory-crazed animal. But the birds were always kind. Her love for nature and science led her to an art and illustration career, and to the Pacific Northwest. She still hasn't stopped drawing. Amy now works as an artist, illustrator and so-so gardener in beautiful & green Portland, Oregon USA.

The motivation behind his work is his wife Vivienne their cats and life in wonderful Oregon.

On the walls right now we have a solo show by Falmouth Graduate Owen Davey.

Owen has just begun his career as a freelance illustrator and has already worked for the Guardian, Anorak magazine, DDB and Templar Publishing. His first children's book 'Foxly's Feast' is due for release in September.

Here and Now is the sister shop to the amazingly cool Here gallery in Bristol.
Two years ago we decided to spread our wings and open a little shop in Falmouth, for all the budding artists down in sunny Cornwall, and this is the result.

We have lots of lovely artwork, prints and handmade cards, alongside a selection of Art books, comics and magazines. We stock a range of gifts and other stuff too.......

We have exhibitions on each month so I thought it was a good idea to let you know whats going on this year.......
